Designing SOS

The Designing SOS class offers insight and awareness to the growing problem concerning indoor air pollution. But this class not only makes the issues know, but also provides solutions to these problems involving interior products and furnishings.

The class provides solutions to implement alternative materials to create a home that is beautiful, breathable and benign to both people and the planet. Knowledge of user-friendly furnishings such as formaldehyde-free furniture, fabrics and wall coverings, low or no VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints and sealers, natural fiber, dyed carpets and rubber and natural padding/underlayment are just some of the alternatives that will be taught to achieve and maintain and healthier home. Students will learn how to search and identify toxins and pollutants emitted in the home and the steps needed to 'heal' the home by eliminating those sources.
